Divine accountability (HOMILY FOR TUESDAY OF THE 9TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR II (JUNE 04 2024)

On the Praises of God rests our security (HOMILY FOR TUESDAY OF THE 9TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR II (JUNE 04 2024)
2Peter 3:12-15a.17-18; Ps.90; Mark 12:13-17

Dear faithful,

In today's Gospel, we are presented with a vivid portrayal of temptation, a moment where sin is often cloaked in allure and enticement. It is a stark reminder that the true test of character is not in succumbing to ephemeral pleasures but in engaging the power of reason and faith.

The Pharisees and Herodians approached Jesus with deceptive praise, intending to ensnare Him. Their strategy was not unlike the seduction that led Herod astray, as recounted in Matthew 14:6-7. It is a cautionary tale of the perils of flattery and the importance of guarding one's words and actions.

The first reading offers a warning from Peter: do not be swayed by the lawless, for in doing so, we risk our spiritual equilibrium. We become most vulnerable when we expose our desires and weaknesses, which can be exploited as bait by those with nefarious intentions. The adage "Fear the Greeks even when they bring gifts" echoes this sentiment, urging vigilance and discernment.

St. Paul encourages us to channel our zeal towards the Lord, aspiring to be found in a state of peace, free from blemish at His coming. True freedom and joy are found not in the accolades of humanity but in the pursuit of divine commendation. The psalmist encapsulates this eternal truth, proclaiming, "O Lord, you have been our refuge from generation to generation."

The Gospel also addresses the matter of civic duty, illustrating that paying taxes and honoring God are not mutually exclusive. Respect for civil authority is a hallmark of holiness, provided it does not conflict with our faith.

Today's liturgy calls us to fulfill our obligations to others while keeping our gaze fixed on pleasing God. For in seeking the approval of mortals, we limit ourselves; it is only in striving for God's praise that we can realize our true potential.

Let us go forth with a renewed commitment to live a life of divine accountability, resisting the temptations of this world, and dedicating ourselves to the service of the Lord.

Amen.
God bless you all
