The inner struggle for goodness in the world

Dear faithful,

The dramatic confrontation between Elijah and the prophets of Baal transcends a mere historical event; it is emblematic of the perpetual struggle between virtue and vice within the human heart. This scriptural episode serves as a clarion call to discernment, urging us to choose the path of righteousness in the internal battle for our souls.

The lure of wrongdoing is often cloaked in the guise of commonality, suggesting that the ubiquity of an act negates its immorality. Yet, today's first reading dispels this illusion. Despite being outnumbered, Elijah's solitary stand with God triumphed, reminding us that divine alliance outweighs any human majority. The notion that "everyone is doing it" holds no weight against the strength derived from "the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth."

Moreover, the prevalence of a vice does not confer upon it moral rectitude. Solitude in righteousness is preferable to communal damnation. Morality is not a human construct but a divine decree, and it is imperative that we heed the guidance of the ultimate arbiter of justice.

The silence of Baal, despite the fervent pleas of its numerous prophets, underscores the futility of false idols. They may offer temporary solace or pleasure, but ultimately, they fail us in life's most pivotal moments. As the psalmist entrusts his preservation to God alone, we too should seek refuge in the Eternal, for all other safeguards are destined to falter.

Let us, therefore, invest our earthly sojourn in securing the "original passport" to the heavenly kingdom, aligning our actions with the will of God, and ensuring our place in His eternal embrace. Amen.
God bless you all
