HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY OF THE 6TH WEEK OF EASTER 8TH MAY 2024
Acts 17:15, 22-18:1; Ps.148; John 16:12-15
The Holy Spirit satisfies us!
After being set free miraculously from prison together with Silas, Paul continued his missionary endeavour towards the gentiles. He came to Athens and was given the opportunity to speak in the presence of the Athenian philosophers and leaders. Paul observed their religious worship and even though it was not perfect, it served as a starting point for Paul to introduce the God of the Christian Faith to the Athenians. Of all the gods they worshipped, there was one with the inscription “To an unknown god”.
Paul did not see the people as totally ignorant; rather he identified their gropings to reach the truth – and the truth is God. They may not know how best to reach this truth, but they did express their desire to reach the truth. So, Paul introduced the gospel of Jesus Christ as the perfect satisfaction of their longing hearts.
In the gospel reading, Jesus saw the longings in the heart of his disciples; the longing to have Jesus stay with them and the longing to know the truth. Jesus assured them that the Spirit will guide them into all the truth. The Spirit will not just come and deliver the truth to them as though in a lecture; it will rather guide them to the truth.
This means that their discovery of the truth will be a continuous life process. The same applies to us today. We desire to know more about life and the world beyond. What will it be like when we die? The answers to questions such as this will not just come in a moment; it will be revealed as we journey with the Holy Spirit.
Therefore, we need to have a cordial and strong relationship with the Holy Spirit who will guide us to the truth. The Holy Spirit is the perfect companion of every man. Without the Holy Spirit, we may not be living meaningful and impactful lives. Without the Holy Spirit we may not know for what purpose God created us and how to actualize that purpose in the world. Without the Holy Spirit we may not know how to journey towards heaven while in this world. Beloved, the restlessness of every human heart can only be satisfied with presence of the Holy Spirit. _Come Holy Spirit and fill the hearts of the faithful; and you shall renew the face of the earth.
