HOMILY FOR TUESDAY OF THE 5TH WEEK OF EASTER

Acts 14:19-28; Ps.145; John 14:27-31a

An unwavering commitment

It is one thing to do what is right, but it is a different thing to do the right thing with the right intention. Now, only what is done is obvious; the intention is not immediately obvious. There are various ways in which we can try to decipher the intention behind the actions of others, or by which our own intentions can be made manifest. Amongst these other ways is our attitude when doing the right thing begins to cause us great discomfort. It is only one who is doing the right thing with an attitude of selflessness that will not be deterred at such moments.

In the first reading of today, Paul was dragged out of the city and stoned. The goal was to kill him; infact, he was left alone when they thought he was dead. Even though Paul did not die, it goes to show the intensity of the persecution melted out against him at Lystra. But as soon as his strength could carry him again, Paul continued his missionary endeavour. Even as Paul was courageous enough to continue preaching, one would have expected him to avoid Lystra. But no! They still went back to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch to strengthen the disciples whose faith may have been dampened when they saw the Paul persecuted. It was at this return that Paul noted that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.

For any thinking person, one must wonder what is so special about this message of salvation for which Paul is so willing to risk his life. The return of Paul to Lystra was itself a message, that when they too experience persecution on account of the gospel, they should never be discouraged. Mind you, this Paul was so educated and rational so that he could not have been acting fanatically. Again, this Paul was not one of the twelve disciples who journeyed with Jesus during His earthly ministry. Nevertheless, his encounter with the Lord on the way to Damascus was enough conviction for him.

Beloved, what is your level of conviction of the gospel truth and values? How well have I utilized the many encounters I have had with the Lord? Paul did not need a miracle for him to be convinced; he only needed to know the one who is the Way, the Truth and the Life. If we are not yet ready to bear inconveniences for the sake of the gospel, then our love for God is nothing to be reckoned with. Jesus has paid the price; the much we can do is to be convinced of this truth.
