God at work in our Lord Jesus Christ (HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY OF THE 4TH WEEK OF LENT

Homily for Wednesday of the 4th week of Lent

Isaiah 49:8-15. Psalm 145:8-9,13cd-14,17-18. John 5:17-30.

"The Lord is kind and full of compassion" is our Responsorial Psalm today, and because of this, prophet Isaiah tells us in the first reading that "the Lord has comforted his people, and will have compassion on his afflicted" (Isa.49:14). Why will the Lord act in this manner? Prophet Isaiah gives an answer to this question, saying, "Can a woman forget her suckling child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb?. Even this may forget, yet I will not forget you" (Isa.49:15).

These words of Isaiah encourage us in difficult and trying moments to renew our love and confidence in God. No matter the sufferings and tribulations we are going through, God will never abandon us. Let us learn to see God's hand in all that happens to us.

This is the message of Jesus in today's Gospel as He calls on the Jews to see the hand of God at work in him. God is real and at work in our Lord Jesus Christ. Hence, He said, "My Father is working still, and I am working" (John 5:17).

When we say we have faith in God, it should entail belief in the work Jesus is doing in the world here and now. "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears my word and believes him who sent me, has eternal life; he does not come into judgment, but has pass from death to life" (John 5:24). The greatest error any child of God can ever make is to seek happiness outside Christ Jesus. We can do all things in Christ who strengthens us. Cut off from him. We can do nothing.

May God grant us the grace to see him at work in all that concerns us through Christ our Lord. Amen.
