HOMILY FOR SATURDAY OF THE 6TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME
Homily for Saturday of the 6th Week in Ordinary Time
Hebrews 11:1-7; Mark 9:2-11
The essentiality of Faith
Transfiguration
The first reading tells us about faith. "Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen" (Heb.11:1). Faith is conviction. One who has faith is convinced that God is telling the truth. God can never deceive us nor be deceived! Great blessings await those who have faith in God.
We have examples of men of faith in God, like Abel, Enoch, and Noah. As a result of their faith in God, wonderful things were done by God through them.
We are encouraged to be people of faith, and that faith will bring about wonderful things in our life if only we listen to God's word in today's Gospel at the Transfiguration, saying, "This is my beloved Son; listen to him" (Mark 9:7).
In listening to our Lord Jesus Christ, we must first believe in Him, practise what He has taught, and hope in His promises. We must overcome the obstacles contrary to these: the obscurity of faith, the roughness of the road which he shows us, so contrary to the desires of the senses, and the fact that what he promises seems to be so far off!
Jesus was transfigured on the mountain in today's Gospel. Great things took place on the mountain. It was on the mountain in Exo.3:1-15 that Moses encountered God and was given the special mission of liberating the people of Israel. On the mountain in 1 Kings 18, Elijah stood as God's warrior to do battle against the prophets of Baal and won in a grand style. Moses and Elijah represent the law and the prophets. On the mountain, Moses and Elijah confirmed Jesus' role in Matt.5:17 as the fulfiller of the law and the prophets.
Our own mountain of encounter and listening to Jesus is the Mass, the Scripture, and whatever good we do to anyone we meet. We need to pitch our tents of good deeds for God.
As we listen to God's word, may He grant us the grace to put His words into practise through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Have a blessed weekend
