Homily for Thursday of the 1st Week of Advent
Isaiah 26:1-6; Matthew 7:21,24-27
Prophet Isaiah tells us in the First Reading: "Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord is an everlasting rock" (Isa.26:4). We can trust in the Lord because He is dependable. What the Lord says He will do, He does. He is not like us. No wonder the Psalmist says: "Those who put their trust in God are like Mount Zion that can never be shaken".
It is in trusting in the Lord that will make us do His will. Hence, Jesus tells us in today's Gospel, "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven" (Matt.7:21). Hearing or reading God's word should lead to doing His will, which in fact provides a sure and solid foundation for our life.
In doing God's will, we shall become like the wise man in today's Gospel who "built his house upon the rock; and the rain fell, and floods came , and the winds blew upon that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock" (Matt.7:24-25).
On the other hand, if we don't trust in the Lord, we have simply refused to do His will and we become like the foolish man in today's Gospel "who built his house upon the sand" (Matt.7:26). On what foundation are we building our life?
May God grant us the grace to always put our trust in Him by doing His will always through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Have a blessed day!
