Homily for Saturday of the 34th week in ordinary time year II Revelation 22:1-7

Homily for Saturday. Thirty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time. Revelation 22:1-7

Luke 21:34-36.

Today brings to an end the liturgical year 2022. As we come to the end of this liturgical year, the Church in our readings today just as she has been doing in the last two weeks calls our consciousness to what will happen at the end of time and the need to always to be ready since we do not know when this will take place.

Through the rich use of symbols God teaches us in the First Reading about the nature of eternal life which is the fulfilment of mankind's deepest yearnings. We are to see God face to face and glorify Him forever. From the description given concerning our eternal abode, it is a place we should all desire to be. "And night shall be no more; they need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they shall reign forever and ever".

As God's children we must take these words seriously because the angel assured St. John saying, "These words are trustworthy and true. And the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, has sent his angel to his servants what must take place. And behold I am coming soon. Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book" (Rev.22:6-7).

To be a part of this eternal abode, Jesus in today's Gospel warns us on the need to be careful so as not to be carried away by ungodly things like dissipation, drunkenness and cares of this life.

As we await the coming of Christ, we must always ensure that our thoughts, words and actions are in accordance with the teachings of Christ and the Gospels and pray constantly for the grace to sustain the capacity to keep watch.

May God grant us the grace to be always attentive by praying always and keeping to Christ's teachings in preparation for His Second Coming through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Have a good day
